A Word

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11BSB

What it means

The psalmist does not deny his sadness; he interrogates it, then preaches to himself. Hope here is a decision spoken to a downcast soul, with a small, stubborn yet.

Psalms 42 and 43 are one lament; this refrain appears three times. The writer is far from the temple, remembering worship he cannot now reach.

Where it addresses you

  • Sadness has settled over you and will not lift.

  • You need to talk to yourself rather than listen to yourself.
