A Word

For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.

What it means

God’s word is sent, not merely spoken. Like rain that does its work before it rises again, it always carries out His purpose. It cannot fail, and it cannot be wasted.

Isaiah 55 is an invitation to exiles: come, buy without money, seek the LORD while He may be found. Verse 10 pictures rain and snow watering the earth; verse 11 says God’s word works the same way, which is why the promise of return can be trusted.

Where it addresses you

  • You have prayed a Word over something for a long time and see no change.

  • You wonder whether the time you spend in Scripture is doing anything.
