A Word

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

What it means

We run a race others have already finished, carrying nothing that slows us, and we run looking at Jesus, who ran it first and endured the worst of it for joy.

Follows the roll call of faith in Hebrews 11. The readers were weary and tempted to drift back; the author points them to those who endured and to the One who endured most.
