A Word

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

What it means

The people who frustrate or oppose us are not the real enemy. Behind visible conflict is an unseen one, and Paul wants us to fight the right battle.

Paul uses the language of wrestling, a close and personal contest. The Ephesians lived in a city famous for magic and the worship of Artemis; unseen powers were not abstract to them.

Where it addresses you

  • You are tempted to treat a person as your enemy.

  • A conflict feels bigger than the people involved.
