A Word

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

What it means

Comfort received becomes comfort given. God does not waste our suffering; He meets us in it, and what He gives there becomes something we can carry to others.

Paul opens his most personal letter by recalling a despair so deep he thought he would die. The comfort he describes is not theoretical.

Where it addresses you

  • You are in trouble and need comfort.

  • You wonder whether your suffering will ever be useful.
