A Word

Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

What it means

The enemy is real and hungry, but the response is not panic. It is clear-headed watchfulness, firm faith, and the strange comfort of knowing you are not the only one under pressure.

Peter closes his letter to scattered, persecuted churches. He has just told them to cast their anxiety on God; now he tells them to stay awake.

Where it addresses you

  • You feel alone in a spiritual struggle.

  • You have grown careless and sense something circling.
