What it means
The victory is not in our strength but in who dwells in us. John speaks of overcoming as already true, because the Spirit of God is greater than every spirit at work in the world.
John has just told the church to test the spirits, since many false prophets have gone out. The assurance follows the warning: discern, but do not be afraid.
